California’s Scenic Route 1

California’s Pacific Coast Highway weaves through the cliffs above Pacific Ocean, affording drivers with one of the most scenic and breathtaking trips in America.

Also known as Route 1 or Highway 1, the best direction to drive the Pacific Coast Highway is from North to South, so that the Ocean is always on the same side as your car and you’re not looking across oncoming traffic to appreciate the wide open vistas.

The Sea Ranch is located a few hours north of San Francisco, California, along Highway 1. With a population of just over 1,000 according to the 2010 census, The Sea Ranch is a planned unincorporated community.

 

Spending a Few Days at the Sea Ranch

My wife, Carrie, and I rented an amazing house there for a couple of days and during one of our morning walks, we came across this view.

Fog and clouds are very common in the early mornings up and down the coast, and this tranquil scene was made all the more moody by their presence.

If you wanted to fly into the area to drive the Pacific Coast Highway, your best bet is to start in Portland and begin driving South. That way, the ocean is never blocked by other cars while you drive on the right hand side.
